The basics of Pilates Exercises
Pilates exercises are designed to increase the movement, flexibility and strength of your body without making you look like a bodybuilder. To do this many of the exercises concentrate on developing the muscles of the abdomen, the back, and the pelvic region. This is referred to as ‘the core’ of your body.
There are more than 500 different types of Pilates exercises that concentrate your mind as well as your body. Pilates exercises are a series of breathing techniques in conjunction with stretching, assisted by equipment, machines and accessories for the purpose.
Here is a list of some of the very positive effects reported by Pilates devotees on their health and fitness: ![]()

We tend to associate the aftermath of doing normal exercise with feeling exhausted and totally drained. This is not the case with Pilates exercises. Pilates involves the use of low-intensity workouts that will energise you.
Different types of Pilates exercises
Many Pilates exercises are performed on a Pilates mat, similar to yoga. However, Pilates enthusiasts suggest Pilates is more beneficial overall than yoga because it strengthens the body by improving strength, posture and flexibility through stretching. Pilates mat routines are supplemented by a variety of Pilates accessories and tools.
The training method is another familiar Pilates exercise format. The training method involves the use of various Pilates
equipment and machines to strengthen and tone your muscles. The machines used in Pilates, are designed to challenge your body, by restricting movement in specific areas whilst encouraging movement of other parts in different directions. This introduces strain endurance, thereby increasing strength.
The desired results are achieved by using resistance and controlled movements. Those who have passed through the beginners level say it can be difficult at first, but your body slowly adjusts to the regime.
Television advertising has resulted in a vast cross-section of the population in the United States taking part in Pilates and enjoying the benefits. As we all know Hollywood actors are very concerned about their appearance so it’s not surprising that many of them participate and promote Pilates. They are particularly interested in the techniques to shape and tone their bodies.
Pilates is now very popular amongst the general public precisely because of its reputation as an effective body sculpting and core strengthening exercise routine. Participants of all ages and physical conditions can benefit from the positive effects of Pilates. The average Pilates routine will include two to four sessions each week.
You can perform Pilates exercises on your own, supported by books, dvds and videos, or you can go to a Pilates studio and participate in group sessions. It’s your choice – you decide exactly what you want to do.
